Pick a Dog that Matches Your Personality

Monday, February 28th, 2011

While you are looking through the various different breed of dog online or at your local pet shop, you should consider more than just looks when you make your final decision.  You should never judge a book by its cover, and this is more than true when it comes to picking the right dog for your home.  (more…)

What’s the Most Popular Breed of Dog in the World

Monday, February 28th, 2011

There are an endless number of different breeds of dog in the world, and finding the right one for you or your family can be quite a tough affair.  With so many differences in personality and stature, it’s hard to say which breed is the best one for which person.  There are many popular breeds of dog that are generally agreed upon as great choices by most people, and these are the dogs we will be discussing today.

A labrador retriever is a popular choice because of their intelligence and playfulness.  These two personality traits are quite a combination because it will allow you to teach your dog advanced tricks that they will actually enjoy participating in.  This type of dog is great with children as they adore playing around for hours on end.  The only drawback of this dog is that it perhaps is a little too friendly to strangers.  You won’t want this dog watching the house late at night to keep out intruders.

A chihuahua is always a popular breed of dog, and they are probably the most popular dog of small stature.  They are miniature animals that usually weight around five pounds, and definitely make a great companion.  The best thing about chihuahuas is that they are still very ferocious, even with their small size.  Their level of confidence is almost laughable considering the fact that they are one of the smallest dogs you can find.

The last dog we will discuss is the golden retriever.  This is the most revered family pet you can have, which is why it is always on lists of the top breeds of dog you can find.  Not only that, but golden retrievers are also often found in movies and TV shows.  This breed of dog loves to get exercise every day and really enjoys the outdoors.

Which Dogs Stay Small When they Get Older?

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Everyone loves a little puppy when they first get them, but some people end up regretting their decision on getting a dog once they grow up to be huge monsters.  For this reason and many others, certain people decide to pick a breed of dog that will not grow up to be too large.  People like puppies for a reason: they are small and easy to pick up and cuddle with.  Why should you get a puppy that is going to grow to be much larger when the only reason you like them so much is their miniature size?

The pug is one of the favorite breeds overall in the dog community, not just when it comes to small dogs.  If you are a fan of bulldogs but find them to be too large or aggressive, a pug might be the perfect choice for you.  Pugs are well-known for their squished faces and happy go lucky lifestyle.  These dogs are probably more like cats because they enjoy lounging around on the couch all day and despise exercise.  If you want a small dog that won’t give you much hassle, the pug is the right choice for you.

If you are looking for a dog that doesn’t shed, the miniature poodle might be right up your ally.  The hair on this breed of dog is quite unique.  It’s short and puffy, almost resembling and afro.  If you’d like a dog with longer, more luxurious hair that doesn’t shed, you may want to go with a Yorkshire Terrier.  These dogs will shed a little bit when you brush them, but you won’t be clogging up the vacuum with dog hair every time you clean the house.  Small dogs can suite and house or living condition because of their size, so pick one out today if you want to be safe with your dog selection.

The Skateboarding Bulldog Phenomena

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Most people have seen a skateboarding bulldog or two on YouTube, and this hilarious sight is not showing any signs of slowing down.  The juxtaposition of a lazy English Bulldog doing any kind of activity, such as skateboarding, creates a humorous situation that anyone can enjoy.  Almost everyone thinks of a dog laying on the couch when they think of a bulldog, which is why a skateboarding bulldog is so surprising.  Skateboarding for a bulldog is pretty easy because of their low center of gravity, and watching one skate down the street never seems to get old.  I’m sure plenty of bulldog owners are now trying to get their dog on a skateboard with their tongues flailing around in the wind.

Bulldogs are usually pretty hard to train, but when it comes to skateboarding, they tend to make an exception.  Instead of being stubborn and insisting on not following their trainer’s orders, bulldogs tend to accept the notion of getting on four wheels and skating around the block.  This is because anyone can enjoy the fun times involved with skateboarding, even dogs.  There have been other animals that have come around to try and steal the bulldog’s skateboarding shine, but they are usually no match for an animal as heavy and wide as a bulldog.

Sometimes their demeanor can seem a little aggressive, but bulldogs are actually very loving and caring animals.  The only reason they ever seem a little mean spirited is because they are always trying to protect their owner.  They would never hurt anyone unless they thought they posed some kind of threat to their master.  After all, you can’t be that angry and mean if you’re skating around with your tongue hanging out of your mouth.  This act has probably changed anyone’s mind who thought bulldogs are not friendly to be around.

Safely Shopping Online for a New Dog

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

The Internet is a tremendously powerful tool that is used to by anything from cell phones, to software, to food, and even dogs.  People can now buy anything with the click of a button, and canines are no exception to this rule.  Dogs of all different breeds can be found online, and now people in many different places can purchase breeds of dog that have never been available before in their local area.  Just like shopping for anything else online, some precautions should be taken before you make your purchase to make sure that you are making the best decision.  Most online stores are there to help, but there are some who are just trying to rip you off.

Shopping for a new dog online can seem very exciting at first, but you must remember to stay calm during the decision making process.  Wait until you can think clearly before making your purchase because you don’t want to buy something spur the moment when you are shopping online and then regret it later, especially a dog.  The most important thing to remember when shopping online for anything is to get a clear description of what it is you are buying.  Ask the seller as many questions as you can before you give them your credit card information because you will want to make sure you are getting the most bang for your buck.  You may also want to check out the reputation of the website you are at because anyone who has had a bad experience at a store is likely to let the world know about it through the Internet.

The quality of a business’s website can be an indicator of how reputable they are, but it should not be taken at face value.  As the old saying goes, you should never judge a book by its cover, so make sure you look into the details of a company thoroughly before you make your purchase.

What are the Rarest Breeds of Dog?

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Everyone has heard about the Labrador Retriever and the German Shepard.  We all have heard great things about the English Bulldog and the Great Dane.  When it comes to dog breeds, there are many popular breeds out there that everyone has seen at least once in their lifetime.  Well what about those breeds that no one really knows about.  What about the Hokkaido Inu or the Chinook?  Most people would think the Hokkaido Inu is a city in China after first hearing the name, but it is actually a breed of dog that people just haven’t heard about because of how rare they are.

The Hokkaido Inu and the Chinook are two of the rarest breeds of dog in the world.  In fact, there are only 800 Chinooks in the entire world.  To put that in perspective, there are more Giant Pandas in the world than Chinooks.  While you may think these dogs are rare because the breeders want to be able to charge large premiums for them, the opposite is actually true.  As sad as it is, no one really wants one of these dogs, which is why they are dying out rather quickly.  They simply are not as popular as some of the more conventional choices in the world of dogs.

The Chinook first came to prominence as a pet that was used to pull sleds up in northern New England around the beginning of the 20th century.  It’s a cross between a mastiff and a husky, which should give you an indication of its size.  There was one main breeder of this dog who died in 1960, and by the time the 80s rolled around, there were only 11 Chinooks left.  Careful breeding practices have brought that number back up to somewhat respectable levels, but because it is not that popular of an option, it is not likely that this breed of dog will be able to last much longer.

Dogs that Watch Television

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

It can be quite a funny sight, finding a dog that enjoys watching television, so if you see your dog viewing the nightly news, you should take a video and share it with your friends.  There is nothing funnier than a dog with human qualities because there is something hilarious about seeing an animal act like a human.  Dogs are generally interested in televisions because they really don’t understand them.  To dogs, a television seems like a window into another room, so they think whatever is on the television is actually in front of them.  The best example of this is when there is a dog on the television.

When there is a dog on TV, or really any other animal for that matter, most dogs start going insane.  They will start barking like crazy and try to let the dog on TV know that this is their territory.  Little do they know, the dog on TV can’t hear them or respond back in any way.  While there is no scientific evidence for this, most people who have dogs would agree that they generally enjoy watching TV.  There is a difference between staring off into space and watching TV, so you should do a little test on your dog to see which activity they are enjoying.  The best thing to put on the television for this test is tennis.  Almost any dog that sees tennis on the TV will start bobbing their head back and forth following the ball as it goes over the net.  Some dogs will even try to snatch the ball off the television and go crazy when they can’t reach it.  It’s actually pretty similar to when a dog chases around a laser pointer.  They know they see something, but they don’t understand it because whenever they think they catch it, it’s not in their paws.

Which Breed of Puppy Brings the Most Laughs?

Monday, February 21st, 2011

The main reason anyone gets a dog is to have a friendly companion around when they are at home.  Everyone needs some company at some point in the day, even if it’s an animal that can’t speak to them.  The American Cocker Spaniel is probably renowned as the friendliest breed of dog around because of how friendly they are with people.  This dog always wants to play with their owner and rarely ever gets in a fight with other dogs.  Cocker Spaniels are very easy to please and are always friendly to new people.  You don’t have to worry about this dog attacking your friends when they come over because all this dog wants is hugs and kisses.

The only reason a Cocker Spaniel would not be happy and making people laugh is when they don’t get enough attention.  If the owner of the dog doesn’t show affection for it, the dog will begin to think there is something wrong with it and then sulk all alone.  As long as the Cocker Spaniel is getting a lot of positive reinforcement, it is likely that it will never face any sad times.  This breed of dog is perfect for children because both kids and Cocker Spaniels want to do nothing but play all day.  The only breed of dog that might be able to compete with the Cocker Spaniel is the Golden Retriever.

The Golden Retriever is pretty similar to the Cocker Spaniel when it comes to personality.  Differences between these two breeds of dog are only obvious when you compare their size and stature.  Golden Retrievers will be much larger than Cocker Spaniels, which can be either a good or a bad thing.  You will be happy with choosing either one of these dogs for your home, and the only thing to consider when picking one over the other is how big you want your dog to be.
