Cold Weather Clothing For Your Puppy!

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

With the cold weather approaching fast, you may be concerned with how to keep your puppy safe and warm.  Here is some simple advice on what kind of clothes and other accessories you can use to keep your puppy warm during the cold months.

  1. Coats and sweaters are a great way to dress your pet for the cold outdoor elements.  You can buy them thick or thin, depending on the size of your puppy.  For Yorkie puppies, they are smaller and you may not think they need added warmth because of their hair, but they do.  Take a trip to your local pet store and take the puppy with you.  Most of the clothing has recommended sizes based on weight, but it’s a good idea to take them with you and try the clothing on.  Doing this will give you an accurate fit and do its job for your puppy.
  2. All of these accessories give added warmth to your puppy and protect them from hypothermia and other health risks.  Try to look for clothing with an added hood; this will protect your puppy’s body and their sensitive ears as well.  Also, for the days it is snowing/sleeting, search for a water proof material so it won’t become wet and heavy for your puppy to walk around wearing.
  3. Another important piece of clothing/ accessory for your puppy is booties for their feet.  These booties can protect their small and delicate paws from the harsh elements of the outdoors.  These booties can protect them from snow that can become impacted between their pads on their feet and create discomfort for your Yorkie puppy.  Also, some ice/snow melting salt can cause cracks and irritation for your puppy’s feet and cause them pain and discomfort.  Ice is also a safety hazard for your puppy and wearing these booties can help prevent slips and falls while walking on the ice.

Of course you want your puppy to be safe and healthy during the winter months, so if you follow these helpful tips on how to protect your puppy from the cold elements this winter, you and your puppy will be happy and comfortable.
