Cold Weather Clothing For Your Puppy!

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

With the cold weather approaching fast, you may be concerned with how to keep your puppy safe and warm.  Here is some simple advice on what kind of clothes and other accessories you can use to keep your puppy warm during the cold months.

  1. Coats and sweaters are a great way to dress your pet for the cold outdoor elements.  You can buy them thick or thin, depending on the size of your puppy.  For Yorkie puppies, they are smaller and you may not think they need added warmth because of their hair, but they do.  Take a trip to your local pet store and take the puppy with you.  Most of the clothing has recommended sizes based on weight, but it’s a good idea to take them with you and try the clothing on.  Doing this will give you an accurate fit and do its job for your puppy.
  2. All of these accessories give added warmth to your puppy and protect them from hypothermia and other health risks.  Try to look for clothing with an added hood; this will protect your puppy’s body and their sensitive ears as well.  Also, for the days it is snowing/sleeting, search for a water proof material so it won’t become wet and heavy for your puppy to walk around wearing.
  3. Another important piece of clothing/ accessory for your puppy is booties for their feet.  These booties can protect their small and delicate paws from the harsh elements of the outdoors.  These booties can protect them from snow that can become impacted between their pads on their feet and create discomfort for your Yorkie puppy.  Also, some ice/snow melting salt can cause cracks and irritation for your puppy’s feet and cause them pain and discomfort.  Ice is also a safety hazard for your puppy and wearing these booties can help prevent slips and falls while walking on the ice.

Of course you want your puppy to be safe and healthy during the winter months, so if you follow these helpful tips on how to protect your puppy from the cold elements this winter, you and your puppy will be happy and comfortable.

Christmas Dangers and How to Prevent Them From Happening

Monday, December 5th, 2011

The holidays are normally a very stressful and hectic time, but adding a Yorkshire Terrier puppy to the mix can prove even more challenging.  Listed below are some tips on how you can enjoy your new puppy and have a merry Christmas all at the same time.

  1. If you are having company over for dinner or just need time to decorate without distractions, you may want to invest in a dog crate.  Some people may be turned off by the sound of “caging” your puppy, but it is a good and humane way to keep them out of things and out of harm’s way.  Also, the dog crate can be used in many other instances in the future, including discipline and bed time.
  2. When hanging decorations, be sure to keep them out of your puppy’s reach.  Yorkie puppies are naturally curious and are very adventurous, so taking this step will ensure their safety and also the safety of your home.  Another safety tip is to keep small ornaments towards the top of the tree and larger unbreakable ones towards the bottom.  Try to avoid using tinsel and other hanging decorations around the house, remember puppies love to chew on things.  Also, when deciding on a place for the tree, keep it away from any open flames; this includes a fireplace if you use it.
  3. You may be aware that certain foods can be harmful to Yorkie puppies, so inform your guests on the dangers so there aren’t any accidental mishaps during dinner time.  Also, be sure to place the garbage in a safe place away from where the puppy can reach.  They can get into the garbage and not only create a huge mess, but could choke on bones or other things tossed away.
  4. Of course toys are a big part of Christmas for your puppy, so take extra care when giving them a new toy to play with.  Also, with company coming over, children may leave their toys laying around for the puppy to get into and choke on.  If there are children at your home, inform their parents to place toys upon higher furniture away from the puppy.

By following these simple steps, you will be able to enjoy a happy and healthy Christmas and future holidays with your Yorkie puppy by your side.
