The AKC, or American Kennel Club, has recently published their list of the most popular dogs for 2009. It may not be surprising that the Labrador Retriever has claimed the #1 spot for the 19th year in a row. What may come to a shock to us Yorkie puppy lovers is that the Yorkshire Terrier has been bumped down to the #3 spot by the German Shepherd.
But before you get too depressed about your favorite breed losing its #2 position, there is good news! The Yorkie is the most popular among the Toy breed group which is no small feat to overcome, given all the cute little faces in this group. Yorkies have been the second most popular dog for quite some time now. But what happened in 2009?
Maybe it was because many of us new Yorkie puppy owners have not been registering our puppies with the AKC – causing the numbers of new owners to drop, sending the Yorkie to #3. Maybe it was because some of us contemplating getting a Yorkie puppy have not done so as of yet. Whatever the case, we’re sure one of our favorite furry breeds has not really dropped in popularity.
A side note, the top 10 most popular breeds were split right down the middle between small and large breeds. It seems as though our little guys are giving the big dogs a run for their money!
To see the full list of the most popular dog breeds for 2009, visit the AKC site here and see if your favorite breed made it to the top. And if they didn’t, remember that they are at the top of your own personal popularity list and that’s all that matters!
