This is a common question many dog owners and dog lovers alike ask their veterinarians and other pet professionals. There is a not a simple yes or no answer. But we can tell you how your dog tastes and how to select a food based on that information.
Although many of your dog’s senses are much stronger than our own such as sight and hearing, taste in not one of them. Humans have about 9,000 taste buds on the tongue. Dogs have about 1,700. This may seem like more of a reason to get sick of food much quicker than we would but that’s not the case. Since they are not tasting as much of the flavor, they may not realize it’s the same thing over and over again. And even if they do, they know they like the taste of it and that’s good enough for them.
It should be kept in mind that dogs have a natural instinct to survive and that will prevail even if they know dinner comes at 6pm each night. Dogs know that food means survival and they will eat anything to ensure that – even the goodies out of the litter box.
Even if dogs are not too picky about what they consume, they do need a balanced diet of meats and vegetables for proper digestion and health. If you know your dog isn’t a big fan of chicken or is allergic to it, choose a food with fish or venison to replace the meat and also offer a healthier, leaner meat for his meals.
The next time you’re wondering how your dog inhales his bowl of food, drooling the entire time, remember that is taste buds are just not the same. And thank the skies above that they’re not nearly as picky as you’re five year old complaining about spaghetti again for dinner.
