English Bulldogs in the Water? Really?

When you look at the build of an English Bulldog, we all think it would be nearly impossible for an them to swim.  While this breed may not be the king of the water like other breeds, it is possible to have some watery fun with your English Bulldog puppy!

Many people think English Bulldogs cannot swim because they have such short legs compared to the weight and density of their body.  This breed is usually very heavy and muscular, making the doggie paddle a bit more difficult for their short legs.  This does not mean your English Bulldog puppy is unable to swim – it just means he’s going to have to work a bit harder at it than others.

Another issue that many refer to is the breathing problems of English Bulldogs.  This breed has a smashed in muzzle, making breathing more difficult.  English Bulldogs are prone to breathing problems but that doesn’t mean each and every English Bulldog puppy will suffer with it.  However, the short muzzle makes breathing more of a task in the water.  Because they cannot get their head high enough out of the water to avoid water going in their nose and mouth, swimming makes breathing a challenge.

This does not mean that English Bulldog puppies cannot swim – it’s just a bit harder for them.  Nothing feels better than a quick dip in the pool, lake or ocean on a hot summer day and English Bulldogs enjoy it just as much, especially because they can become overheated so easily.

If you’d like to teach your English Bulldog to swim or to at least enjoy the water with him, try purchasing a life preserver made specifically for their breed.  This will keep him safer in the water and eliminate some of the worry about him sinking straight to the bottom.

Maybe buying a life preserver sounds silly to you.  If that’s the case, try holding your pup in the water with you.  Place your hands behind his front legs on his rib cage.  This will allow him to move his legs on his own and allow you to help him move around and stay above the water.

We must have trust and confidence in our pups in order for them to have confidence in themselves.  If you want your dog to swim, believe that he can and help him through it when he needs it.  Soon, you could have a better swimmer than you ever expected!
