Pet obesity is on the rise and is especially common is English Bulldog puppies. According to the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention, nearly 35 million dogs are overweight and 6.7 million are considered obese. Obese pets are expected to live 2 years less than pets of a normal, healthy weight. Here are some healthy treat ideas to keep your English Bulldog out of these statistics!
Carrots. Yep, carrots! We know, your English Bulldog puppy isn’t a horse or a rabbit but carrots have a sweet taste that many dogs enjoy and even prefer to other types of treats. Carrots also to keep your puppy’s eyes healthy and maybe even prevent the onset of cataracts and blindness. Plus, you can buy a whole bag of baby carrots for $4 or $5 that will last you a long time!
Cheese. Cheese isn’t the healthiest treat to have but it has very low sugar which is a big contributor to weight gain in both humans and pets. You can purchase a bag of cheese cubes and use these as a nice little treat for training or rewards.
Turkey or soy Hot dogs. Turkey hot dogs are lower in sodium than regular hot dogs and a much healthier alternative for dogs and humans. These are also low in sugar and much healthier than some store bought dog treats. Cut these into small pieces and use them as a reward!
Turkey pepperoni. Many major food store chains carry turkey pepperoni which is much lower in fat and sodium. A bag of these could last a long time as a tasty treat for your English Bulldog puppy!
There are many other alternatives to store bought dog treats that you can experiment with to see what your puppy likes the best.
