The Puggle

Overview
One of the hottest hybrid breeds in the United States today, the Puggle was first bred in the 1980s. It was only in 2005 that this cross between a male Pug and female Beagle caught the imagination of the nation with their adorable personality and appearance to become the most sought after hybrid. Unlike mix breeds, which are crosses between three or more breeds, it is possible to predict the temperament, health concerns and appearance of hybrids.

Appearance of Puggles
The Puggle has a thickset body and grows to about 10-15 inches at the shoulder and 15-30 pounds at adulthood. The size of the head might vary from one dog to another, with some Puggles having larger and fuller heads, while others have thinner and smaller heads.

The Puggle has a short-haired coat of smooth, straight hairs. Puggles are available in a large variety of colors, including fawn or tan, black, silver or tri-colored. The muzzle is usually black, regardless of the color of the coat. The forehead is deeply wrinkled, the tail is curled and the ears droop.

Temperament of Puggles
Having inherited the best characteristics of the Pug and the Beagle, the Puggle is intelligent, sociable, playful and affectionate. Puggles are eager to please and sweet-tempered. They are great with children, other dogs and other family pets. They are always happy to see you and demonstrate their excitement by vigorously wagging their curly tail. Puggles love human company and will probably follow you around the house.

Like the Beagle, Puggles love to discover new places and new smells. They are active, gregarious dogs who love to meet new people and new dogs. Their temperament makes them great pets for children, young adults, adults and even seniors.

Grooming and Care of Puggles
The life expectancy of this hybrid breed is between 10 and 15 years, although, on average, Puggles tend to have a lifespan close to 15 years. This is not a hypoallergenic dog, so people who are allergic to Pugs or Beagles might also be allergic to the Puggle.

This is a low-maintenance dog and basic care and grooming can prevent most health concerns. Puggles should be bathed once a month to avoid dry, itchy skin. After a bath, brushing the coat with a rubber brush will help remove all loose hairs. This breed usually needs brushing once a week. The Puggle also needs to have its teeth brushed to prevent the accumulation of plaque.

Puggles enjoy visiting the dog park and going out for walks. A brisk walk of about 15-30 minutes helps release pent up energy. Puggles love to have some space to run around in - a fenced yard or daily visits to a dog park will be good for this breed’s mental and physical health. These daily walks and playtime also allow for some vital bonding time for you and your new Puggle puppy.
