English Bulldogs

Overview
The English Bulldog, as the name suggests, traces its origins back to England and should not be confused with the American or French Bulldog. The English Bulldog is believed to have descended from the Asian Mastiff that was brought to Europe by nomads. The English Bulldog was specifically bred in the 14th and 15th centuries for bull-bating during arena games, hence the name, Bulldog. Its short muzzle and powerful lower jaw made it a perfect candidate for this gambling sport. It was only when bull-bating was outlawed in the 19th century that this breed gained the status of a companion dog.

This is probably a good choice for those who are looking for a loyal and gentle pet but are willing to be patient yet tough with the infamous obstinacy of the English Bulldog.

Appearance of English Bulldogs
English Bulldogs are known for their wide head, broad shoulders and stocky build. A short muzzle, the classic underbite and drooping lips is what makes this breed adorable for many a dog lover. The skin over the brow usually has dense folds and the eyes are very dark, totally round and set far apart. The ears are thin, small and are folded back like a rose. The tail is short and carried low.

The coat of the English Bulldog is short and smooth. This breed is available in red, fawn, white, red brindle or a combination of these colors. Black is not an acceptable color for this breed. The English Bulldog grows to a height of about 12-16 inches and weighs between 50 and 55 pounds.

Temperament of English Bulldogs
Despite its intimidating appearance, the English Bulldog is a gentle dog. They are an affectionate and dependable pet. They love to be around people and are patient with children. They are also good with other family pets. They do, however, tend to be wary of strangers, which make them excellent guard dogs. This breed has also been often described as stubborn and persistent. Some English Bulldogs might tend towards being dominating and need strong handling to show who the leader of the “pack” is.

English Bulldog Health
Although the average lifespan of an English Bulldog is 12 years, some are known to live up to the age of 14 years.

This breed’s Pug nose makes it vulnerable to respiratory problems. This also means that they tend to drool and snore loudly. Poor eyesight is also a common health concern. Flatulence and skin infections are also commonly reported for this breed. The folds of the skin need to be cleaned regularly and kept dry to avoid infections. They are also prone to suffering from heat stroke. Special attention to preventing obesity and daily light exercise can help avoid many of these health concerns.
